My Internship Experience: Chris Scroggins
Who would have guessed that my most difficult assignment as an intern at United Way would be creating this farewell blog? Not me, certainly. To say that I am thankful for this opportunity is an understatement; I feel transformed, both personally and professionally. Being a Marketing intern has given me the ability to apply my classroom education to the real-world, broaden my industry-specific skill-set, sharpen my career expectations, and strengthen my resume. On a deeper level, United Way of Lake County has taught me the importance of giving back to your community. Developing a true sense of community awareness is perhaps my proudest accomplishment during my time as an intern. I hope to embody these values wherever life takes me.
When I’m not discussing my weekend with our President and CEO, Kristi Long, I am typically working on various research projects, preparing and presenting data analytics, designing various marketing materials, creating blog and social media content, or convincing myself I don’t need another piece of carrot cake from the kitchen. My favorite project was taking part in the marketing campaign for National Read Across America Day. This was my first experience with a large-scale marketing campaign; it required a lot of filming, video editing, graphic design, and social media scheduling that I’ll utilize throughout my professional career. In addition, I had the opportunity to visit Pleviak Elementary School and film the volunteers reading Dr. Seuss books to the children. Experiencing first-hand the impact United Way has on the youth of Lake County was undoubtedly my fondest moment as an intern.
Finally, I’d like to thank the staff of this organization who provided me with this incredible experience. I am forever thankful for the friends and connections I’ve made here. From the moment I stepped foot into the office, I was treated like family. The unmistakably welcoming, tight-knit atmosphere of this building is truly remarkable. Furthermore, I’d like to say a special thank you to the Marketing team: Cynthia, Jen, Jurelle, and Sarah. Their passion for this organization is unparalleled. Every ounce of growth I’ve made over the past 5 months is a direct result of their constant encouragement and willingness to share their vast marketing knowledge.
