We extend our heartfelt thanks to every donor, volunteer, corporate and community partner who helps us build a stronger Lake County community! Partner Spotlight: College of Lake CountyThis month we’re shining a spotlight on College of Lake County (CLC). CLC is a public community college whose primary campus is located in Grayslake and other two campuses are in Vernon Hills and Waukegan. UWLC has been partnering with CLC since 1994. We currently have two CLC leaders on our Board, Dr. Lori Suddick, CLC President, and Jesus Ruiz, Dean of the Lakeshore Campus. CLC staff have supported UWLC through giving campaigns, participated in volunteer events, such as creating hygiene kits for students experiencing home displacement, and they’ve also been a great partner in spreading the word about 211 through staff training and ongoing promotion to students. We asked longtime supporter, Sue Fay, Executive Director of Human Resources at CLC, why she has chosen to support UWLC. “I am pleased to support United Way of Lake County through its partnership with College of Lake County. We share a focus on providing holistic support to the communities that we serve. Through United Way’s 211 helpline, the 24/7 access to information and referral services has and will continue to have a transformative impact on our students, employees and their families.” Thank you, CLC, for your loyal support and for being an important part of the work we do to transform lives right here in Lake County. Lake County’s COVID-19 Community Response FundWe recently announced that $84,345 has been awarded in the ninth and final round of Lake County COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund grants to eight local nonprofits. This grant cycle focused on summer programs for children up to age thirteen that address learning loss through academics or enrichment programming and include activities or services that address children’s social-emotional needs due to the impact of the pandemic. Since the fund was launched on March 20, 2020, a total of $1,201,662 has been raised and granted back into the community to 51 nonprofits so they could continue their work serving individuals and families most impacted by the pandemic. This ninth and final distribution leaves the fund at a zero balance, Thank you to the hundreds of individuals and organizations who donated to the fund! United Way of Lake County remains committed to uniting leadership and resources to build a stronger, equitable community where everyone can thrive. Celebrating Pride in Lake CountyOn June 4, we had the pleasure of sponsoring and participating in the LGBTQ+ Center’s PrideFest in Waukegan, alongside many of our community partners. That same day, we also had the opportunity to join in Waukegan’s Pride Drive, hosted by Waukegan Friends. While celebrating progress, we understand how far we still have to go. Across the country, the LGBTQ+ community continues to face challenges, inequities and discrimination. If you are someone whom an LGBTQ+ person trusts with their whole selves, your encouragement matters and your love makes a difference. UWLC Commemorates JuneteenthUnited Way of Lake County gathered with the community on Saturday at the Juneteenth Festival of Lake County. Our staff and Board members participated in the Black Expo to share education opportunities and a wide range of health resources, financial assistance, employment services and more available through 211. In celebration of Juneteenth, we honor the present and reflect on our shared history and tradition. Together, we are building a brighter, equitable future for all our children and families to thrive. Premier Leaders Event Raises $250K for Our Education Programs and 211On June 2, we held our 8th annual (and second virtual) Premier Leaders Event. The event featured a data-driven, inspiring keynote address by early childhood expert Dr. Cristina Pacione-Zayas, we discussed our big plans to increase programming that builds equity in Lake County, and we raised funds in support of our work. We are thrilled to share that we surpassed our fundraising goal and raised a record $250K to support United Way’s educational programs and 211 helpline, thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors and sponsors! The funding will help us meet real needs right here in Lake County and build equity so all our Lake County children can thrive. Provide Students with the Supplies They Need to SucceedWe have partnered with Waukegan Public Schools to provide students from low-income families with new school supplies. You can join in and help us ensure that students have the tools and self-esteem needed to succeed in school this fall. Through July 15, we will be collecting online donations. For just $20, you can sponsor a student, which means a local child will receive a backpack full of all the school supplies they need. Before school starts this fall, we will distribute backpacks full of supplies to the families that need them most. Learn how to get involved and help us get the word out. WSCC offers several programs for underserved families in Waukegan, Beach Park, North Chicago, Park City and Zion. Recently, WSCC launched a new summer program called Seeds 4 Success. Students learn how to cultivate, plant, grow, and harvest fruits and vegetables, as well as prepare healthy and nutritious meals using garden-fresh foods. Working together, they have transformed three vacant lots into a thriving community garden! A wide variety of fruits and vegetables are already growing, including asparagus, beans, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, collards, corn, cucumber, eggplant, leeks, lettuce, melons, mustard greens, okra, onions, peanuts, peppers, potatoes, pumpkin, shallots, spinach, squash, strawberries, and tomatoes, as well as herbs such as bee balm, lemon balm, parsley, peppermint, rosemary, and thyme. Flowers have been planted nearby to attract pollinators. The Seeds 4 Success program provides hands-on learning activities and practical experience that can help foster student interest in science, horticulture, or landscaping. Dr. Stevenson added, “It’s inspiring to see students very much engaged in learning about soil temperatures, proper pH, and moisture content.” United Way of Lake County is proud to support this incredible program! Company Spotlight: TrustmarkTrustmark, a national benefits provider, is a long-time and loyal supporter of United Way of Lake County. Our mission to improve lives in Lake County and Trustmark’s mission of helping people increase wellbeing are in happy alignment. We are thrilled to have Trustmark as a partner all these years, and we are excited to participate in their “Break to Educate” series. Trustmark created the Break to Educate series to encourage employees to get involved in and give back to their local communities. They invite organizations that Trustmark employees support to come and talk about their work. It is an opportunity for employees to take a break from their normal workday to learn about the organizations and causes they can support. The Break to Educate series has invited organizations to talk about hunger/food insecurity, housing insecurity, the social determinants of health, and a planned poverty simulator. It has been a very successful series and has engaged employees across the country. Interested in getting involved with United Way at your workplace? Volunteer Opportunity: Reading BuddiesWe need volunteers to spend an hour in a classroom reading with kindergartners! 120 children in Lake County will attend a Kindergarten Countdown Camp this summer. Learning the joy of reading is an important piece of this camp and we need volunteers to demonstrate how much fun reading a book can be! Reading with young students brings books to life and shows them how entertaining reading can be. These children come from low-income families – so many don’t have books at home. Introducing them to the concept of books, stories and reading is an important milestone for them as they prepare to enter kindergarten this fall. Click below for more details. . Volunteer Opportunity: Kindergarten Countdown CampWe are looking for several in-classroom volunteers to assist with our Kindergarten Countdown Camp (KCC).
