Honoring Ms. Carol May

We are excited to share that Carol May, principal of McCall Elementary School in Waukegan, was honored at the Illinois Principals’ Association luncheon this past Wednesday. She was selected as the Lake Region Elementary Principal of the Year for the work she has done cultivating a positive environment within her school and ensuring the academic and social needs of all of her students are met.

United Way of Lake County is proud to have worked with Carol May and McCall Elementary School in the past. This past March, to honor the great children’s author Dr. Seuss, United Way of Lake County organized a reading day where local professionals read to almost 300 students from preschool to 3rd grade.

“Our partnership with United Way has a positive impact on many of our students. Students need to understand how learning in the classroom connects to the real world. Seeing professionals inspire students to meet their future goals is the best thing for the child” Carol May said of the reading day.

This reading day is an extension of the United Way Reading Success Program, which was developed to help elementary-age students develop strong reading and comprehension skill so they are able to achieve key milestones in their academic journey. Currently, over 50% of 3rd graders in Waukegan Public School District cannot read at grade level (IL Report Card) and United Way of Lake County has teamed up with Waukegan elementary schools, including McCall Elementary, to change that.
