211 Day Celebrated Across Lake County

In special recognition of United Way of Lake County’s 211 helpline, the Lake County Board, as well as the Villages of Antioch, Fox Lake, Gurnee and Mundelein, and Cities of Highland Park, North Chicago, Waukegan and Zion, have all proclaimed February 11 as “211 Day”!

We are grateful to our local government partners for their generous support of our 211 service, as well as the many other partners and individuals who have contributed to help make 211 a reality for our community.

211 has already made a tremendous impact, making more than 375,000 connections to essential health and human services in Lake County.

Leaders United is a group of caring, committed professionals, ages 21-50, on a mission to encourage philanthropy and volunteerism among their peers and help students succeed.

Voices United: A Celebration of MLK Jr.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, we partnered with McCall Elementary in Waukegan to host our annual reading event—Voices United: A Celebration of MLK. Community leaders were invited to read to the students. Each book provided a unique opportunity for meaningful discussions about the work of MLK.

Through events like these, we open doors for elementary students to connect with powerful role models, nurture a love for reading, and deepen their understanding of history, equality, and community. This celebration is a testament to Dr. King’s enduring vision of a brighter, more equitable future. Together, we honor his legacy and inspire the next generation to dream, lead, and achieve.

Year-End Campaign Raises $166K!

At the end of 2024, we raised funds for our education programs and 211 helpline. Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and several foundations, we raised an impressive $166K!

We are grateful to our supporters for making it possible for us to have an even bigger impact on our local community. Now more children will be prepared to succeed in school and more of our neighbors will get connected to critical resources and life-changing support.

Career Exploration with Round Lake Students

Leaders United partnered with junior and senior students from Round Lake High School, alongside their parents, for an empowering career panel. The first-generation college-bound students gained valuable insights into resumes, internships, time management, relationship building, and more. This inspiring collaboration was about unlocking potential, forging lasting connections, and uplifting the next generation of leaders.

Attend Women United’s Lunch & Learn

Women United mobilizes more than 140 women to ensure children living in Lake County are prepared for kindergarten and ready to succeed. Join Women of Color: United in Leadership

Women United is thrilled to announce the upcoming cohort of Women of Color: United in Leadership, our transformative 9-month program designed to connect, elevate, and strengthen women leaders in our community. With fellow participants from leading organizations like AbbVie, Medline, Aon, and Great Lakes Credit Union, this program is a space where powerful ideas and meaningful relationships take root and leadership potential is developed.

This unique program offers an opportunity to connect with a network of driven and like-minded women leaders while building skills and insights to advance your career and make a meaningful impact in the community. Participants will strengthen relationships with influential community stakeholders and engage directly in impactful projects and leadership roles. Additionally, the program provides access to leadership seminars, small group mentorship, and executive coaching from seasoned professionals, offering invaluable support and guidance for personal and professional growth.

Parent Mentor Program Receives Award

The Parent Mentor program, delivered in partnership through HACES, United Way of Lake County, Lake County Workforce Development, and Waukegan Public Schools, recently received the Workforce Solutions Award from the Illinois Workforce Partnership (IWP). IWP advocates for the creation of a skilled workforce for our state’s continued competitiveness and growth, connecting businesses and individuals to a wide array of resources utilizing our public workforce system.

The Parent Mentor program trains parents to be mentors who volunteer in a classroom four days a week. Mentors receive training on literacy, computer skills, leadership, and more.

Earlier this year, through the partnership with Lake County Workforce Development, an expanded component of the program was piloted with nine parent mentors. Lake County Workforce Development supported the parents as they worked in the school district and provided additional wrap around services.

Two of the internship goals are to address the professional educator shortage and the increasing need for bilingual support within the district. The internships provided a direct pipeline for parents to test out being dedicated to a school on a full-time basis. Ivette Martinez who manages the Parent Mentor program, explains, “Without the internship, parents might not feel qualified or know where to start.” During the most recent cohort, nine parents became interns and two moved on to be hired directly by the Waukegan School District as paraprofessionals.

Kristi Long Awarded for Outstanding Achievement

Our inspiring leader Kristi Long, was presented with the Staben House “Home for the Holidays” Outstanding Achievement Award, recognizing her decades of outstanding dedication to the success and well-being of families in Waukegan Township and throughout Lake County.

Thank you Waukegan Township Staben House for this special recognition, and for all you do to uplift women and their children experiencing homelessness.

United Way’s New Brand Strategy to Reflect Its Transformative Approach Forward

United Way of Lake County (UWLC) joins United Way Worldwide (UWW) to announce a refreshed brand to reflect the organization’s reach and impact in communities as one of the world’s largest and oldest privately funded charities that helps over 48 million people annually, including all 714,000 community members in Lake County.

“The global brand refresh is a significant milestone in our organization’s 137-year history and represents our commitment to evolve and innovate in order to meet the changing needs of our communities worldwide,” said Angela F. Williams, president and CEO of UWW. “It signifies our organization’s longstanding journey, while also embodying our transformative approach to remain relevant, sustainable, impactful now and in the future.”

United Way’s global brand refresh effort comes at a time when data reveals a decline in the number of Americans who volunteer or contribute to nonprofit organizations. Through this renewed strategy, United Way aims to spur greater engagement and action among the public and reinforce what United Way stands for, how it’s different, and why audiences should be engaged with the work of United Way.

Kristi Long Announces Retirement

United Way of Lake County’s longtime President and CEO Kristi Long will retire from her position effective May 1, 2025, after more than two decades leading the nonprofit. The UWLC Board has launched a national search for Kristi’s successor and expects to announce a new president and CEO by March.

“Kristi Long is an exemplary president and CEO who has led the transformation of the organization into an impactful, sustainable United Way committed to improving the lives of children and families in Lake County,” said Joe Garnett, UWLC Board Chair. “She has united nonprofits, businesses, and individuals to take action to strengthen our community so all can thrive.”

“It’s been a deep privilege to serve this community and make a difference right here where I live and work,” said Kristi Long. “I know the future is bright for the lucky next person who gets to lead this fabulous organization.”

Power of the Purse Raises Funds for Early Education

On November 3, Women United held their signature fundraising event, Power of the Purse. A sold-out crowd of more than 200 women joined forces to celebrate women, friendship and philanthropy. They enjoyed an afternoon of brunch, bubbly, purses, raffles and more. This year’s event raised more than $70K, which will support critical, local early education programs that focus on building the foundation for strong and successful academic futures.

Power of the Purse was a resounding success, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, members, and attendees, including many first-timers as well as valued returning guests. The room buzzed with energy as attendees engaged in meaningful conversations and raised their hands in support of early childhood education. The event showcased the incredible impact that can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision for positive change.

Youth Success Update

Leaders United was thrilled to kick off another year of our before-school mentorship program, Breakfast Club, with a new cohort of students at Robert Abbott Middle School. We had the privilege of welcoming them with the help of Breakfast Club alumnus, Brent. Brent shared his personal journey of how being part of Breakfast Club made a positive, lasting impact on his high school years, his relationship with his mentor, and how the program gave him a strong foundation for success. His story is a testament to the power of mentorship and community. We’re excited to see what this year brings as we support the next generation of students.

As part of our Career Exploration program, we invited Anton Mathews, President of the Waukegan Park District, Leaders United member, and team member at the Office of Congressman Brad Schneider, to speak with Robert Abbott Middle School’s National Jr. Honor Society. Anton shared his high school journey with honesty; covering the good, the challenging, and the fun. He emphasized the importance of building a strong support system, dreaming big, and the power of staying coachable.

Lake County Celebrates Five Years of 211 Helpline

United Way of Lake County, in partnership with Lake County Government and local health and human service providers, recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of our 211 service and more than 350,000 connections made since its launch.

On October 24, nearly 200 community leaders and others representing government, business and nonprofits joined for a program to discuss 211 Lake County’s impact and results. The event, emceed and moderated by CBS News Chicago anchor Dana Kozlov, included a panel discussion regarding community needs, how the 211 system has improved and testimonials from those who received assistance.

Housing and shelter has remained the top need presented to 211, representing 45% of all contacts. To read more about our 211 results and data, please check out our latest 211 Annual Report. More information can also be found on 211LakeCounty.org.

Distributing Thousands of Books to Local Schools

We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago to bring nearly 3,000 bilingual books to schools in Lake County!

This incredible gift, provided by the Mexican Secretary of Public Education, will benefit the Waukegan, Round Lake area, Mundelein, North Chicago, Beach Park, and Highland Park school districts.

The books cover subjects like Math, Language Arts, Science, Civics, Arts, Social Studies, and novels for children and young adults. These books are particularly valuable for English Language Learners and Dual Language Programs.

We’re excited to make a positive impact on literacy and educational resources in our community and hope to extend this initiative to more districts in the future!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Literacy

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we teamed up with John S. Clark Elementary School for our first-ever Somos Unidos reading event! Community leaders came together to share stories rich in culture, tradition, food, and language with the students.

Building a Stronger, Safer Community

When did you join UWLC?

I joined the UWLC team on August 14, 2024.

Tell us about your title and role.

As the Women United Coordinator, I support our expanding network of remarkable Women United members through various volunteer programs, meetings, and events that align with United Way’s mission to unite leadership and resources for creating lasting change that will improve and save lives in Lake County. Additionally, I collaborate with the Resource Development team to strengthen donor relations and assist with event planning.

What made you want to be a part of this organization?

Having lived in Lake County for most of my life, I deeply appreciate the unique people and resources in this area. I believe that building bridges within communities can foster a better future for everyone. To that end, I’ve long admired UWLC’s commitment to supporting those who may have less access to essential services, particularly mothers and young children.

Which of UWLC’s programs do you connect to most and why?

As a mother of three grown children, I have a deep personal connection to child development. Success By 6‘s early education programs resonate with me because they offer vital support to young children and their parents during crucial formative years, ensuring they have the foundation necessary to thrive.

What is your favorite part of your job here?

The best part of my job is the incredible staff, volunteers, and community members I have the privilege of working with every day. The talent, passion, and dedication of this welcoming group constantly inspire me.

When you are not at work, what kinds of things do you do with your time?

I enjoy a variety of volunteer roles, including serving as a reading tutor for kindergarteners. I also love cooking, reading, and creating memories with my husband and family, as well as taking walks with our two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. When I have the chance to travel, my favorite destination is any warm beach!

‘Stuff the Bus’ Exceeds Expectations

We are thrilled to share we exceeded our goal for this year’s annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive! Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we prepared and distributed 3,775 backpacks full of supplies to local school districts, agencies and back-to-school fairs across Lake County! We also distributed 300 teacher kits.

We are so proud that many more students will have the supplies they need to succeed during this new school year! Thank you to the 100+ companies and donors who supported this drive and the 130+ volunteers who donated their time to pack, sort and stuff each backpack.

Maria Colunga, Community Outreach Specialist at Round Lake Area School District 116, shared, “Families are grateful because they are getting the help they need. Through this campaign, we help families focus on what’s important—getting kids ready for school.”

Results and Reflection: Kindergarten Countdown Camp

This summer, our Kindergarten Countdown Camp (KCC) program saw great success. 142 incoming kindergarten students attended KCC across six school districts; Antioch, Beach Park, LEARN John and Kathy Schreiber Campus, Round Lake, Waukegan, and Zion.

Before camp, only 45% of students averaged at least “in progress” or better across the eight skills assessed (shapes, colors, letters, name writing, counting, book familiarity, rhyming and fine motor skills). After camp, we saw that average increase to 75% “in progress or better” in those same eight skills. That’s a 67% increase!

“It’s incredible how a few weeks can make such a difference!,” said Ms. Celia Montes de Oca, a KCC teacher in Waukegan.

Each KCC student received a three-year Kohl Children’s Museum membership, snack packs, and backpacks full of supplies to start the school year confident and ready to succeed.

Lake County’s 211 has made more than 300,000 connections to help since its launch. The measurable impact of 211 will be presented, including data on community-specific needs and valuable results. We will share stories of how 211 has made a real difference for community members, employers, agencies, and local government.

The program will feature a panel discussion with civic leaders talking in-depth about top community needs and how the service has improved and saved lives. Attendees will network, enjoy a delicious breakfast, connect with local leaders and receive 211 materials.

Join Women United on Sunday, November 3 at Royal Melbourne Country Club in Long Grove for their signature fundraising event, Power of the Purse.

Come away for a fun-filled afternoon celebrating women, friendship, and philanthropy. We’ll enjoy a delicious brunch, bubbly, prizes, and special surprises. There will be designer bags, silent auction items, and raffle baskets to win. All proceeds will support early learning and care programs in Lake County.

Supporter Spotlight: Derse

Derse—a full-service trade show and event agency—partnered with United Ways throughout the country to lead diaper drives. Here in Lake County, Derse’s Waukegan and Northbrook locations collected more than 900 diapers and 1,900 baby wipes, which will be distributed to families attending our Better Together program. An additional $1,116 was raised through monetary donations and will go towards purchasing additional diapers, baby wipes, and supplementary items to support Better Together families.

Derse also created and donated 36 new stencils for us to use when we are installing or refreshing our Early Learning Trails across Lake County.

Better Together Program Expands to Fox Lake

Better Together is our free program for children ages 0-3 and their caregiver where they learn, play, and develop school readiness skills together. We have offered this program in the North Chicago community for many years and are proud to be expanding this fall to serve the Fox Lake community.

Registration is still open for fall sessions in both North Chicago and Fox Lake. Please help us spread the word about this important program.

Women United Hosts Back to School Fest

Earlier this month, Women United hosted their 3rd annual Back to School Fest at Whispering Oaks apartment complex in Waukegan. The resident families got ready for school with preschool screenings and haircuts and received books, STEM kits, and backpacks filled with school supplies. They enjoyed summer snacks, face painting, games, and had fun attending a dance session and playing in the bounce house.

Thank you to the more than 50 women who donated, volunteered or coordinated the event, and to our partners for joining us to brighten the lives of these families. This event was filled with community spirit and only made possible through the generosity of our Women United members and partners who believe in investing locally.

Women United mobilizes 140+ amazing women to ensure children living in Lake County are prepared for kindergarten and ready to succeed. In addition to caring deeply about this collective effort, they have a vibrant calendar of social, volunteer and philanthropic events to make it fun and doable regardless of your busy schedule.

Donating Supplies to Local Students with Stuff the Bus

United Way of Lake County’s annual community supply drive, Stuff the Bus, has seen great support since launching in May. Dozens of local organizations have recently volunteered their time to help us stuff backpacks with all of the supplies students need for school.

Thank you to our wonderful community members who have made Stuff the Bus such a success! Hundreds of local students now have the supplies they need to feel confident and be successful in school.

We are busy wrapping up this supply drive and are excited to share the final results in next month’s newsletter.

Now Available: Kindergarten Readiness Calendars

Our 2024-2025 bilingual Kindergarten Readiness Calendars are now available! They are free, a great resource for families, designed for preschool-age children, and filled with tips and activities to help families get ready for the first day of kindergarten.

Donate School Supplies to Local Students

For families struggling to meet basic needs like food and shelter, school supplies become extras, not essentials. Without access to these supplies, children start the school year at a disadvantage. But together, we can make a difference!

Join our Stuff the Bus supply drive! You can donate school supplies, or make a monetary donation, to help ensure every student goes back to school with the supplies they need. Now through August 15, you can contribute as an individual or your organization can team up to make a difference!

Barnett Capital and SBB Research Group Join Stuff the Bus

The generous people at Barnett Capital and SBB Research Group purchased and packed supplies for 131 backpacks, which will be distributed to children at Whispering Oaks Apartments in Waukegan during Women United’s Back to School Fair. Barnett Capital also made a generous donation to Women United’s Little Kids, Big Futures Fund, helping to support early childhood learning and care in Lake County. Together, we’re creating a brighter future for local students.

211: A Critical Community Resource

United Way of Lake County has been working diligently to spread the word about 211—our free, confidential helpline that connects our community members to local health and human services. This multilingual helpline has English and Spanish-speaking navigators and interpretation to more than 150 languages.

211 has already made a tremendous impact on our community. Since launching in 2019, 211 has made 300,000+ connections to essential services.

We need the community’s help to share about this important resource. Visit our 211 Toolkit to find downloadable and printed materials that you can share with your network.

We can also provide 211 training for your organization. If interested, please contact 211LakeCounty@uwlakeco.org.

Preparing Children for Kindergarten

This summer, we were pleased to offer Kindergarten Countdown Camp (KCC) in 6 Lake County school districts. The 140 participating students are now better prepared to succeed in school this fall after practicing key kindergarten skills, following directions and adjusting to the classroom setting.

Women United has continued to show incredible support for KCC over the years. In addition to providing substantial funding for KCC, Women United enjoys getting involved in the program. Women United members recently visited several KCC classrooms, where they read to the students and lead them in a craft project. Thank you, Women United, for sharing your love of learning with our KCC students and for all the ways you support this impactful program!

Bright by Text Expands Age Range

Bright by Text has expanded age-based content up to age 11!

Bright by Text is a great free resource for anyone looking to receive activities, child development information and other tools to assist in their parenting journey. This national texting program’s messages, available in English and Spanish, include topics like brain development, health and wellness, STEM, safety and more.

Snap-On Credit at Glen Flora Elementary

Snap-on Credit’s amazing team of creative and enthusiastic volunteers recently joined us to retouch and expand our Early Learning Trail at Glen Flora Elementary in Waukegan.

Early Learning Trails are publicly accessible outdoor learning games designed to develop children’s academic readiness and encourage active movement and play.

The volunteers brought vibrant colors and life to the school, making it a more fun and engaging place for the kids. Thank you, Snap-on Credit volunteers, for your support of Lake County youth and families!

Silly Snack Packs with Trustmark

Trustmark recently joined us to create 144 Snack Packs! The group of volunteers adorned each bag with playful decorations and included a handwritten joke card.

The snack packs are being distributed to the families participating in our summer early learning programming and are sure to brighten their day.

Thank you, Trustmark volunteers, for putting smiles on the faces of so many local children and families!

Premier Leaders Event Raises $264K for Our Education Programs and 211

On June 4, Lake County civic and business leaders gathered for our 11th annual Premier Leaders Event at the charming Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest. Attendees mingled while enjoying food and cocktails, learned about our work and plans to increase programming, and then raised their paddles in support of our programs.

We are thrilled to share that we surpassed our fundraising goal and netted $264K for our education programs and 211! We are grateful for the generous support we received from so many individuals as well as our sponsors. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Premier Leaders Event a great success!

Lake County students are now out of school and enjoying their summer break. Even so, stores will soon be advertising back-to-school supplies for the fall. Celebrating Pride in Lake County

Pride Month is not just a celebration; it is a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and acceptance for all. At United Way, we believe in creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

On June 8, we had the pleasure of sponsoring and participating in the LGBTQ+ Center’s PrideFest in Round Lake Beach, alongside many of our community partners.

Annual Meeting and Board Member Update

We were proud to hold our Annual Meeting at the National Museum of the American Sailor, where we highlighted our fiscal year 2024 impact, welcomed new board members, and thanked outgoing board members for their service. We’re grateful to Capt. Steve Yargosz, Commanding Officer at Naval Station Great Lakes, for hosting us and sharing the fascinating history of the base and what it means to serve.
