Kindergarten Countdown Camp

Kindergarten Countdown Camp (KCC) is a free summer learning program for incoming kindergarten students who have little to no preschool experience.

Children who attend preschool are more likely to enter kindergarten socially and emotionally ready to succeed in school.

Taught by licensed teachers, Kindergarten Countdown Camp prepares students for a successful start in kindergarten. Students adjust to the classroom setting, practice following directions and rules and are able to practice key kindergarten skills such as recognizing shapes, letters, counting and writing their names.

2025 KCC:

Registration for Kindergarten Countdown Camp 2024 is closed.

Registration for KCC 2025 will open in Spring 2025 and will be announced on social media.

Teachers report that children should be at least ‘in progress’ in key kindergarten readiness skills when starting school. The eight skills assessed are recognizing shapes, colors, letters and numbers, writing their name, book familiarity, rhyming, and fine motor skills.

In 2024, KCC was available in the Antioch, Beach Park, Round Lake, Waukegan, and Zion communities. At the beginning of KCC, 45% of students averaged at least ‘in progress’ or better across the eight skills assessed. By the end of Kindergarten Countdown Camp, 75% of students were ‘in progress’ or better in skills needed to succeed in kindergarten. That's a 67% increase!
