Kindergarten Countdown Camp: Julia Paukert

We are thrilled to share the next post in our Kindergarten Countdown Camp (KCC) summer blog series. Up next, we’d like to introduce Julia Paukert who will be sharing their experience as a KCC volunteer this summer.

What is your role at Kindergarten Countdown Camp (KCC)?

My role at camp was assisting the teacher in lessons, classroom management, and engaging the students.

What is your favorite part about being a volunteer at KCC?

So far, my favorite part in this camp was being able to see the students grow from the first to last week. At the beginning of camp very few students had the ability to write their name, recognize colors, shapes, numbers and even letters. By the end, however, the knowledge that they gained from the different lessons had prepared them for kindergarten.

How has being a KCC volunteer impacted you?

The teacher I assisted, Mrs. Feldman, has definitely impacted me and my passion for pursuing an education degree. Mrs. Feldman allowed me to view students as individuals and not as a whole class. Additionally, she had inspired me to continue with my dream of teaching elementary level students to see the long-lasting impact a teacher has on this age group.

Does KCC benefit the children and families attending?

Yes, I truly believe that Kindergarten Countdown Camp has made a strong and beneficial impact on these students. The camp has instilled strong values in the students like having a healthy breakfast, respecting your teachers and even the importance of friendship among classmates.

What does education mean to you?

Education to me sets students up for success by laying the foundation of healthy academic habits, strong social skills, and acceptance of diversity. Education is not primarily based on your ability to know the core curriculum; it is the skills and experiences you have learned that develop you into a well-rounded individual.
